Challenge

Week 9-Challenge

Objective: To create connectors between the components in the model according to the given requirements from 1-7.

Procedure:

As the given model has not been meshed > go 2D Automesh > set target element size as 5mm > select the surfaces > click mesh. Make sure that opposite surfaces have the same mesh density, also try to match the number of nodes in them.

  • Question 1
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select seam.
    3. Select type > select Seam-Quad(angled+capped+L) > set weld angle as 45.
    4. Select the location as nodes > select the desired nodes at the right_rail_2 > set spacing as 5.00.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected Right_Rail_2 & Front_truss_1 and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Question 2
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select seam.
    3. Select type > Quad.
    4. Select the location as nodes > select the desired nodes at the left_rail_2 > set spacing as 5.00.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected between Left_Rail_2 & Front_truss_1 and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Question 3
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select spot.
    3. Select type > select seam > type = hexa(adhesive). Set the strips and coats
    4. Select the location as nodes > select the desired nodes at the Right_Rail_1 > set spacing as 5.00. Connectivity is set as mesh dependent.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected between Front_truss_2, Front_truss_1 & Right_Rail_1, and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Question 4
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select spot.
    3. Select type > select Weld. Select num of layers as total 3 and num diameter as 5.00.
    4. Select the location as nodes > select the desired nodes at the Left_Rail_1 > set spacing as 5.00 and width as 2.00
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected between Front_truss_2, Front_truss_1 & Left_Rail_1, and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Question 5 & 6
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select bolt.
    3. Select type > select bolt (general). Select num of layers as total 2, change to create hole if none.
    4. Select the location as nodes > then select the desired nodes at the Right_Rail_2/Left_Rail_2.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected between Rear_truss_2 & Right_Rail_2 and Rear_truss_2 & Left_Rail_2, and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Question 7 & 8
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select spot.
    3. Select type > select rigid (for Q7) / spring (for Q8). Select num of layers as total 2, set connectivity to mesh dependent.
    4. Select the location as nodes > then select the desired nodes at the Right_Rail_1/Left_Rail_1.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected between Right_Rail_1 & Right_Rail_2 (for Q7) and Left_Rail_1 & Left_Rail_2 (for Q8), and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
  • Questions 9: Here the Reinf_plate was connected to the front truss 1 and 2 using a seam-quad-(vertical and angled)
    1. Right-click in the model tab > create new component > right click on the component and select make current.
    2. Now Go to 2d > select connectors > select seam.
    3. Select type > select seam-quad-(vertical and angled) > set weld angle as 45.
    4. Select the location as nodes > select the desired nodes at the right_rail_2 > set spacing as 5.00.
    5. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected Reinf_plate & front truss 1 and set that as the tolerance.
    6. Click on create.
    7. Use the same parameters. Measure the distance between the two nodes that are to be connected Reinf_plate & front truss 2 and set that as the tolerance.
    8. Click on create.

Using similar steps mentioned earlier 3 more connectors were made. They are spot welds between Rear_truss_1 & Rear_truss_2, bolt connection between Rear_truss_2 & Right_Rail_1 and another bolt_connection between Rear_Truss_2 & Left_ Rail_1.

Two more Seam-quad (angled+capped+L) was created between Front_Truss_2 & Right_Rail_2 and Front_Truss_2 & Left_Rail_2 respectively using the same techniques.

After the connections are added, according to the type of mesh created earlier the mesh might get distorted. These changes in the mesh must be rectified using the mesh cleanup tools and a smooth flow must be obtained.

Result: The required connection were successfully made between the components as provided in the assignment. After the connections were made, parts of the model were remeshed to rectify the changes caused by the added connections in the mesh.
