Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Aim:-To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly.
Objectives:-
- Cut the gear by half
- Rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut
- Results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation
Pre-processing:-
Geometry:-
This is given geometry we have to cut the gear to bring the geometry within limit.
After cutting the geometry in spaceclaim we have to update the geometry
Material Selection:-
Structural Steel:-
Connection:-
In the connection we can define various contacts and joints between two worm and gear
Contacts:-
For this case we have only one contact which is frictionless
Frictionless - worm To gear
Joints:-
I have defined two joints for proper boundary conditioning both joints are body to ground
- Revolute - Ground To worm
- Revolute - Ground To gear
Meshing:-
Mesh size of 3mm is used and is medium.
Element Matrics:-
Analysis Settings:-
The simulation is of 30 steps.
Joint Load:-
The rotation is given in the interval of 100 degree.
Post-Processing:-
Equivalent Stress:-
Equivalent Elastic Strain:-
Total Deormation:-
Results:-
| MAX | MIN | |
| Equivalent Stress | 1159.7 MPa | 7.7693e-009 MPa |
| Equivalent Elastic Strain | 6.3756e-003 mm/mm | 6.8119e-014 mm/mm |
| Total defromation | 27.776 mm | 4.3734 mm |
Conclusion:-
- In the initial stage I tried to run the simulation with maximum time step value of 5e-2 but after 1200 to 1300 degree of rotation the convergence error occured . To resolve the error I done the modal analysis and calculated the time step value with the help of formula Tmax=1/20(Fmax) .And putted the time step value 5e-3 then afterwords simulation ran as expected without any error.
- For this Simulation we can see from result more stress and strain is genrated in gear than the worm .
