Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Worm Gear Mechanism
Objective- To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm Gear mechanism. For the academic version, you need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits. For the challenge, you have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and Find out the Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation.
Solution –
First we add the material needed from the engineering library.
Material Properties for Structural Steel
Now we upload the model to the geometry and open it in space clam and see if there are any discontinuities in the model.
For the Acadamic version to bring the model within limits we delete half of gear.
Update the model to the mechanical module. And Opening the module.
Now in connections we add contacts and joints between the worm and the gear.
Contact is kep as frictionless.
We add the joints to the model, revolute joint for the worm as well as the gear.
we Mesh the model
For analysis settings we use total 50 steps for the step the settings are
setting for 1st step
Setting for 2 to 50th step
Now we add a joint load of rotation type for the worm and input the rotation degrees with a 25 degree increment per step at first and then an increase of 50 degree for each step. Total rotation is of 2200 degrees.
After setting up the problem insert the desired results in the solution and solve.

Conclusion - Maximum values are
Equivalent Stress = 893.11 Mpa
Equivalent elastic strain = 0.0048744 mm/mm.
Total Deformation = 20.801 mm
Thus if the material is structural steel for both worm and gear then the maximum values for stress strain and totol deformation are the values above.
