Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Worm Gear Simulation Report
Aim: For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly. For the academic version, you need to cut the gear by half to bring the model within limits. For the challenge, you must rotate the worm to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model. You can use a finer mesh while performing the challenge and submit a well formatted report with appropriate images.
Procedure:
- Select Transient Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
- Structural Steel is chosen under Engineering Data.
- Under geometry tab, import the given geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model.
- A frictionless contact is defined between the teeth of worm and gear.
- A revolute joint (body-ground) is given to worm.
- Another revolute joint (body-ground) is given to the gear.
- The mesh size was set to 1.5mm after adaptive sizing was switched off.
- Under transient structural tab, we set the analysis to 15 steps with timestep defined by time.
- A joint load is given to the revolute joint of worm, with rotation in increments of 50deg.
- Equivalent Strain, total deformation and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
- Run the simulation by clicking on “solve”.
