Week 8 - Universal Joint
Aim:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring in ANSYS-WORKBENCH.
Objective:
There must be three materials used on the joint with the springs alone and the materials are Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium
Procedure:
MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Initially, we will be importing the geometry model into ANSYS-WORKBENCH and then check for any geometrical errors in the same.

After which we will proceed to give Connections for the case setup model. For this simulation we will be only studying about the solution parameters occurring at the spring so we won't be providing any contacts for the case setup model rather we will be providing only the joints for the model which will transmit the motion throughout the universal joint.
The first type of Joint will be Fixed which is to be given only the corner face of the spring model as shown in the image below.

Now, we will be providing Revolute Joint as Ground to Body for the both the joints and the rotation co-ordinating properly to the global co ordinate axis as shown in the two images below.
Then we will be providing mesh for the setup model and to obtain accurate values we must provide the element size such that the setup model will have a refined mesh.

Now, for the boundary conditions we will be providing Joint Rotation for one of the joints and the values will be entered in tabular data for the given time steps respectively as shown in the image below.

RESULTS.
STRUCTURAL STRESS

stress for case1

STAINLESS STEEL

STRESS

CONCLUSION:

From the simulation results we can say that the Max. Total Deformation of all the Cases i.e., for all the three materials remains the same.
By comparing the values of Max. Equivalent Stress for the three cases, we can see that for the Cases 1 and 2 i.e., the materials Structural Steel and Stainless Steel there is high stress on the spring when compared to Case 3 i.e., the material Titanium Alloy.
