Week 8 - Universal Joint
UNIVERSAL JOINT SIMULATION
Universal Joints are basically used as power transmission devices in the heavy commercial vehicles where the engine is basically at the front and the power is transmitted to the rear axles with the help of properller shaft using universal joints.
In this Double Universal Joint Simulation we wii be observing the behaviour of the joint uderr constraint with different material properties viz:
CASE I: Structural Steel
CASEII: Titanium Alloy
CASEIII:Stainless Steel
CASE I:
GEOMETRY:
Fig.Geometry of Double Inoversal Joint Simulation
JOINTS:
Fig. Joints Analysis
In the above joint probe the A joint which at the tip of spring of double universal joint is fixed and the surface of the joints are given body to ground revolute joints.THe rest of thejoints between the spider and the yoke shaft are body to body revolute joints.
MESH:
Fig. Mesh generated for the simulation
Fig.Element Quality
In the above the element quality is averaged near ti 0.789 which is quite suitable.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:
Fig. Boundary Conditions
In the above the driving ending of the joint is rotated with an angle of 150 degrees in 5 sub-steps of 30 degrees each.

CASE II: Titanium Alloy
In this Case the the material property of the joint has been changed to titanum alloy

CONCLUSION:
| Sr No. | CASE | MATERIAL | TOTAL DEF (mm) | VON MISES STRESS (MPa) | ELASTIC STRAIN |
| 1 | I | Structural Steel | 38.637 | 1809.2 | 0.0096 |
| 2 | II | Titanium Alloy | 38.637 | 874.78 | 0.0097 |
| 3 | III | Stainless steel | 38.637 | 288.94 | 0.0015 |
From the above it is clear that the deformation will be the same irrespective of the material conditions and the stress and strain will be varied accordingly, so by the above time it is clear that Stress is higher in Structural steel and lowest in stainless steel and same as of strain is higher in titanum and lowest in stainless steel.
