Week 8 - Universal Joint
OBJECTIVE:-
- To perform Transient Analysis on a Double Universal joint with a spring by using three different materials.
Geometry:-
Materials used:-
- Structural steel
- Stainless steel
- Titanium alloy
Connections:-
Joints:-
Fixing bottom face of spring:
Revolute joints assigned on both the shafts:
8 Body-Body Revolute joints assigned on two universal joint pins:
Mesh:
Mesh Size of 3 mm was used for the whole model.
Analysis settings:-
Joint Rotational Load:-
Case 1:-
Using Structural Steel:
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 38.637 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 4.518e-9 MPa , Max. value = 1643 MPa
Case 2:-
Using Stainless steel
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 38.637 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 4.5128e-9 MPa , Max. value = 1590.1 MPa
Case 3:-
Using Titanium alloy
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 38.637 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 4.4691e-9 MPa , Max. value = 803.57 MPa
CONCLUSIONS:-
Comparing all three results in tabular form:

Comparing all the three results, we can say that:
- Total deformation value remains same for all three cases.
- Maximum stress is obatined in Structural steel with value of 1643 MPa.
