Week 8 - Universal Joint
Objective
In this study, I perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy. The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone and obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them.
This study is done in Ansys 2022
Procedure:
1.Geometry
- Input the model as Step format in geometry.

2.Material assignment
- Open Engineering Materials and select the required material.
- All component has structural steel as material in starting .

3.Meshing
- Face mesh size: 2mm
- Location : Crank and member 1 face.

Element quality:

4.Boundary condition
1.Connection
.It has no contact connection
2.joint creation
- Both cases have same joint.
2(a)
- Type: Fixed support
- Connection Type: Body Ground

2(b)
- Type: Revolute
- Connection Type: Body Ground

2(c)
- Type: Revolute
- Connection Type: Body Ground

2(d)
- Type: Revolute
- Connection Type: Body-Body

Similarly create the other joint with pin

3.Analysis setting :

5.Results (output):
Case 1 for structural steel material
Equivalent Stress
Spring Driven part stress

Total deformation:
Result for other cases at different material

Conclusion:
Titanium alloy material shows the less stress generation and approximately all material has similar deformation ,so it is good to use as compare to other material.
