Week 8 - Universal Joint

OBJECTIVE :-

  • To obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation by perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy

PROCEDRE:-

  • Open ansys workbench R2
  • select transient structural analysis
  • rename the work
  • open engineering data section ,add required materials like structural steel ,stainless steel and the titanium alloy for first case ,second case and the thied case respectively
  • import the geometry
  • open ansys mechanical
  • rename geometry parts as suitable
  • select structural steel for all parts for the first case ,for the second and third cases select stainless steel and titanium alloy respecivly on for parts which has joint with spring ,all other parts remains as structural steel
  • delete all default contacts in connection section
  • insert new body to ground fixed joint ,select tip of spring as its scope
  • insert body to ground revelute joint , select its scope by selecting part which has spring on it
  • insert body to ground revelute joint , select end parts which do not have spring on it
  • insert body to body revelute joint twice and select its mobile scope and reference scope appropriately
  • in mesh section turn off adaptive sizing and input element size as 4 mm
  • in analysis section input number of step as 5
  • change weak spring to program controlled
  • keep large deflection on and turn off auto time step ,input time step .1s
  • insert joint load in transient section ,select joint as revelute -Ground to component 1
  • select type as revelution .input data through tabular data
  • run solve

RESULT :-

CASE I:-

ALL PARTS MADE UP OF STRUCTURAL STEEL :-

TOTAL DEFORAMTION :-

EQUIVALENT STRESS :-

CASE II :-

JOINT WHICH HAS SPRING MADE UP OF STAINLESS STEEL :-

TOTAL DEFORAMTION :-

EQUIVALENT STRESS :-

CASE III :-

JOINT WHICH HAS SPRING MADE UP OF TITANIUM ALLOY :-

TOTAL DEFORAMTION :-

EQUIVALENT STRESS :-

TABULATION :-

TOTAL DEFORMATION (mm) EQUIVALENT STRESS(MPa)
CASE I 38.637 1460.4
CASE II 38.637 1414.4
CASE III 38.637 720.5

CONCLUSION :-

  • It shows that same total deforamtion in all cases
  • equivalent stress is more in structural steel and it is 1460.4 MPa
  • equivalent stress is very less compared to others in case III which made up of titanium alloy and it is 720.5 MPa
