Challenge

Week 8 - Challenge 6 - Core & Cavity Design

AIM:

To create the Core and cavity blocks for the switch bezel designed in the earlier challenge.

Objective :

  • To create core.
  • To create cavity.
  • creating parting surface.
  • creating parting line.
  • To create draft analysis.

Tooling Axis:

Tooling Axis is created on the surface along which a point is created on the centre of the surface and a line is extruded along the Z is which is normal to the surface. The tooling axis determines the direction of the core and cavity moves.

Core:

Core is a moving part having the ejector pins, which is used to eject the mold fom the core. Core refers to the elimination of plastic material in thick sections that would otherwise cause issues like long cooling times, uneven shrinkage and molded-in stresses.

Cavity:

A mold is a hollow form typically made from stainless steel that has plastic injected into it to manufacture a plastic part. The plastic is inserted into the mold cavity, which is a hole in the mold shaped like the desired part.

Draft analysis:

Draft analysis is a angular tapering given at the design stage to every plastic component that has to be manufactured. For this design we have given the draft angle of 2.9degee which is widely accepted for cost saving purpose.

Draft analysis for core:

Draft analysis for cavity:

Parting surface:

parting surface is a surface that separates the mold block into two parts, the core and the cavity.

Parting Line:

A parting line is an inevitable part of injection molded products. It is the line of separation between where two halves of a mold meet

Closed Body:
