Morphing and its Application

Morphing and its Application

Aim: Introduction to morphing, its application and morphing of a Floor Panel using ANSA.

Morphing:

Morphing is a technique in a Pre processor for Structural Analysis ANSA, used for reshaping of the CAD model or the FE model. This technique is used for the purpose of impovisation or bring about the change in the model used for real time.

Type of Morphing

  1. Domain (Box) Morphing

Domain or Box Morphing is preformed via boxes that are created around a particular part or assembly that the user intends to morph. The movement of the Morphing boxes control points defines the morphing operations on the entities inside the Morph box. This type of Morphing can be applied to both FE and Geometry based models.

  1. Direct Morphing

ANSA’s Direct morphing features gives the user the ability to efficiently modify a part locally without having to create Morphing boxes. This method is extremely useful in creating local modifications on single parts. Creation of depressions, surface fitting certain FE part features to new target geometry, moving selected features along the contour of a surface and also the ability to freeze (rigid) elements during the morphing process are some of the direct morphing abilities.

  1. Parametric Morphing

The desired morphing actions can be saved as parameters which can be accessed in batch mode. Users can enforce desired shape changes by changing numerical input value for the appropriate parameter.

  1. Geometry Morphing

ANSA brings to the CAE world its ‘one – of – a kind’ tool for CAD geometry morphing. This pioneering concept allows the user to utilize the inventory of all the familiar FE morphing functions to perform equivalent operations in a CAD environment on geometric entities.

Applications

  1. Aviation

One industry that benefits the most from morphing is aviation industry. The rocket used for defence as well as for the aircraft modification, this tevhnique is found to be useful one. By application, the part that goes through major changes are its fuselage and wings. Through this different aircraft are made depending on its application and variant.

  1. Automobile

Common application of morphing invloves tranforming the type of a car. Maruti Suzuki was a sedan, but its tail was morphed and made a hatchback for its use in higgh traffic condition. The same stand for Honda Amaze, where the actual and a bigger Honda City is transformed to its smaller version. The same is done for increasing the size of the tail or making the sedan to SUVs or SUVs to TUVs.

From the above figure, a sedan is transfromed to SUV, while in the right, the trunk is increased,a long with its feature.

One of the part that has its application is in Floor Panel

Modelling of Floor Panel

Procedure:

  1. First we will open the CAD file in ANSA readable format. And then we will do TOPO over entire region and clear the CAD of any topological error. For this part, the error was existence of triple cons at adjacent regions. We will clear the errors.

Fig: Floor Panel

  1. We will try implying morphing on local scale or overall i.e we will do domain and direct morphing. First we will take a section with ribs like projection. For morphing we will first create a box using Geometry option. We will select our geometry and confirm it. On confirmation we get the box arund the part we selected. We will select MOVE command and select the points to MOVE. Here we will move the points in Y direction to increase its length.

  1. We will try this on other areas with curves and bends and imply this. The following showcases the morphing at the curves and the end of the panel

  1. The above morphing were part of Box morphing, we will select the whole model in a box and supress it down in Y direction. This supressing of complete model is an example of Geometry as well as Direct morphing

Learning outcome:

  1. Understood the definition of morphing.
  2. Learnt the types of morphing and its application
  3. Applied morphing technique on Floor Panel using ANSA

Conclusion:

Morphing of Floor Panel using different morphing technique is done.
