Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

Objective

In this study, I performed a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model . The analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases has run and the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain are compared them for all the three cases.

This study is done in Ansys 2022

Procedure:

1.Geometry

  • Input the model as Step format in geometry.

2.Material assignment

  • Open Engineering Materials and select the required material.
  • Structural steel is used as material in ANSYS .

3.Meshing

. First provide rigid stiffness for barrel and cam barrel, because for study mesh for these parts are not required.

  • For Meshing the Sphere element size = 3mm

4.Boundary condition

Connection

1.Contact creation

  • Select the faces of gear teeth which will be in contact during simulation running
  • Definition > type - Frictional less
  • Advanced > Formulation - Program controlled

2.joint creation

2(a) Fixed support (Insert by right click on analysis setting)

2(b)

2(c)

3.Analysis setting :

. Number of step=9

For step 1: For step 2 to 9:

Initial time step= 0.1s Initial time step= 0.1s

Minimum time step=0.05s Minimum time step=0.05s

Max time step=0.2s Max time step=0.3s

Large deflection =ON

5.Results (output): for frictionless

Stress

Directional deformation:

Elastic strain:

Result for friction 0.1:

Result for friction 0.2:

Analysis setting :

. Number of step=9

For step 1: For step 2 to 5: For step 2 to 5:

Initial time step= 0.1s = 0.1s = 0.1s

Minimum time step=0.05s =0.05s =0.005s

Max time step=0.2s =0.3s =0.2s

Large deflection =ON

Conclusion:

the equivalent stress of Frictional Contact With Coefficient of friction as 0.2 is greater than the Frictional Contact With Coefficient of friction as 0.1 is also greater than the With frictionless CONTACT. The variation between the result is due to type of contact we used as well as the coefficient of friction. Higher in coefficient of friction value will experience high equivalent stress and Lower in coefficient of friction value will experience Low equivalent stress. The overall Equivalent Elastic Strain, Total Deformation and Directional Deformation are same with some small values.
