Week 7 Challenge
Mold blocks.
- 1 Part file was given to interpret the designs and proceed with making mold blocks.
- I followed the process mentioned in the tutorials to make the mold blocks which started with making cavity and core surface by Mold tools
- It starts with using drafts analysis and choosing the tooling direction to check if the drafts given are up to the standard which is set to 0.5 degrees.
- After drafts analysis I would scale the components according to the shrinkage allowances as it was given 0.6% so I scaled it by 1.006.
- Then I had to select edges for the parting line for which I had to select edges which would give least number of undercuts which will prevent over application of sliders.
- So I created some sketches on each of faces and projected them on the middle of the extruded features with the help pf split line feature so that they would gain their shape without any sliders.
- Then I chose parting lines feature and chose the tooling direction according to the part geometry and then selected the edges to be considered as parting line.
- Then I created parting surface by selecting ruled surfaceon each of the edges of the parting line except the fillets and ones which are not in the plane.
- Then I would joint them by lofted surfacesfeatures with the fillets as guide curves. Then I would knit them altogether to make one surface body.
- We still need to create the shut off surfaces to create the cavity and mold surfaces. By selecting the feature called shut off surfaces in mold tools toolbar and selecting the edges of the holes or cuts where shut off surfaces are needed we can get shut off surfaces and this will complete the process to get mold cavity and core surfaces as different surface bodies.
- After getting the cavity and core bodies I would hide the solid body and copy the parting surface by Copy/Move entity fromdirect editing toolbar by selecting the parting surface and then clicking OK. This creates a second surface in the same place then I would hide one of them and one of the core or cavity surface from feature panel.
- After all this I would Knit the cavity surface and parting surface then I would open this in an assembly and create two new parts for core and cavity. Then I would sketch a rectangular block around the cavity surface on parting surface then I would extrude it both sides to make a solid cuboid with our parting surface in the middle. And select offset surfaceswith 0 mm offset to copy the surface of core or cavity from the solid file to the dedicated part file.
- Then I would choose cut with surfacetool from surfaces toolbar and select the knitted surface and cut in the direction away from cavity to get an impression on the other side of the block. This solid body is then renamed to cavity block. And same process is repeated with core surfaces too but direction of the cut n cut with surface is towards the cavity to get extruded solid body as a core block.
- Same process is repeated in both the cases.
- In this assignment the only challenge face was the time taken to select the edges to make shut off surfaces.
Sliders
- To create sliders I followed the step by step process as it was in the tutorials.
- It starts with the slider of the circular undercut in the core block. I started with a sketch in the plane of the undercut to split the core block in the region around the undercut and the rest of the core block by split featurein direct editing toolbar.
- I edited the split part and the core block according to the profile of the undercut and the saved it as a separate file and deleted the split region from the core block part file.
- I did the same process in the second slider and saved both in the same folder and then imported them in the assembly as new part to complete the whole assembly.
- Then I created a sketch on the surface of core block to create a split of the insert part by selecting the current sketch and plane which was generated 20 mm below lowermost surface of the profile.
- Then changed the color of the sliders as yellow and inserts as blue.
