Week-6 : Turbocharger Modelling

Turbocharger Modelling

Aim:

  • To List down different TC and locate examples from GT Power
  • To Explore tutorial number 6 and 7
  • To Plot operating points on compressor and turbine maps
  • In which application Variable Geometry Turbine is beneficial?
  • Explore example- Diesel VGT EGR and understand the modeling part

Introduction:

A turbocharger is also known as turbo, is a turbine driven, forced induction device that increases an internal combustion engine's power output by forcing extra compressed air into the combustion chamber.

Different Turbo chargers in GT

1. Turbocharger with Power turbine

2. Variable geometry Turbo-charger

3. Waste-gate Turbocharger:

VGT:

Variable-geometry turbochargers (VGTs), are also known as variable-nozzle turbines (VNTs), are a type of turbochargers, usually designed to allow the effective aspect ratio of the turbocharger to be altered as conditions change.

VGT devices are designed to increase boost pressure at low speeds, reduce response times, increase available torque, decrease the boost at high engine speeds to prevent over-boosting, reduce engine emissions, improve fuel economy and increase the overall turbocharger operating range
