Week 6: Conjugate Heat Transfer Simulation
Objective:
To run Conjugate Heat Transfer study on a pipe of 5 mm thickness, 15 mm inner radius and a 0.2 m length Aluminium Pipe on Converge Studio.
Theory:
Conjugate Heat Transfer is a phenomenon where both the solid and fluid medium interact and a flow of heat energy takes place between the two mediums and in each medium itself.
Aim:
- Run Grid Dependency Test
- Effect of Super-Cycle stage interval
Geometry:

Conditions:
- Turbulance Model: k-epsilon
- Inlet Fluid Velocity: 7.28 m/s (Reynolds Number= 7000)
- Transient Study: 0-0.5 seconds
- Super-Cycling Intervals : 0.03, 0.02, 0.01
- Base Mesh: 4 mm , 3 mm , 2 mm
Mesh Size 0.004 m (4 mm):

y+ Contour : Range 0 to 29

Temperature Contour:

Mesh Size of 3mm:

y+ Contour: Range 0 to 30

Temperature Contour:

Mesh Size 2 mm:

y+ Contour: Range 0 to 11

Temperature Contour:

Case 1: Different Mesh Size but same SuperCycling Interval:
For Solid:

For Fluids:

Case 2: Different SuperCycling Interval but Same mesh size:

Animation for mesh size 2 mm and Super Cycle Interval of 0.01
Observations:
- As the mesh gets finer Temperature Contour more accurate.
- Super Cycling helps reduce overall simualtion time.
- The final convergence temperature for same mesh size but different Super Cycling Interval is same for all cases but different for the cases where mesh size is different but Super Cycling Interval is same.
