Challenge

Week 6

Objective:

For the given rear door FE model, apply the technique and the elements to implement the connections. Write a detailed report on why you chose a certain type of element for connecting certain parts of the door.

Procedure:

The given rear door model needed connections to be added.

  1. Door Hinge area & Latch Cover Area:
  • RBE2 element was created from Nastran tab. Elements > RBE2.
  • The first 3 RBE2 elements were many-node elements.
  • Then pairs or RBE2 master nodes were connected though two-node RBE2 elements.
  • The two-pair RBE2 nodes had DOF=12345. 6 was removed to enable rotation about Z axis.
  1. Handle Region:
  • RBE2 element was created from Nastran tab. Elements > RBE2.
  • There were 2 holes, each hole was given an RBE2 element (Many node).
  • Then the 2 many-node RBE2 elements were connected with another RBE2 element.
  • Then a mass of 100g was applied. This was done by Elements > CONMi > CONM2 > Nodes. The centre node of the handle was chosen, and the value of mass was entered in tonnes in the RBE2 card.
  1. Weather Strip:
  • The weather strip is placed around the window region of the rear door.
  • Firstly, used Perimeter > Feat2Curve to convert the edge of the window into a curve.
  • Then the curve created was copied and duplicated along Y-axis by 10mm with the help of Transform option
  • Then we convert each curve into Spot line by using Convert > Curves > Spot Line. Select one line at a time.
  • Open Connection Manager and select the spot line.
  • Give connection as RBE3-CBUSH-RBE3.
  • Create a new CBUSH card, with parameters as shown in image.
  • Enter the parameters of RBE3-CBUSH-RBE3 card as shown in image.
  • Choose the Door as P1 and Window as P2 and give Spacing = 10.
  • Click Apply and Realize connection.
  • Now, to change the orientation of all CBUSH elements to match the global co-ordinate system, we click on CBUSH manager.
  • Add Orient and CID columns from Filters.
  • Select all and Click Modify.
  • Here we modify the Orient to “With Cord” option and set CID value as 0. The 0 CID value refers to Global Co-ordinate system. Then click apply to modify all CBUSH elements.
  • Hence now the orientation of all CBUSH elements match the global co-ordinate system

Learning Outcome:

This challenge has helped me understand about the different types of connections available in ANSA and about how they can be added to the FE. Different regions require different connections and ANSA has almost all kinds of connections available in the software.

Conclusion:

The given rear door FE had connections applied to it.
