Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

AIM :

To Performing a simulation for Pressing the Sphere on a plate and capturing the Plastic deformatioin.

OBJECTIVES :

Adding the appropriate materials.

Assigning the appropriate material to the respective component.

Create a Symmetry along the x & y axis.

Create a Connection between Sphere and Plate.

Discritize the model.

Applying the Boundary Conditions.

Calculate the Output results for Plastic Deformation on the model.

PROCEDURE FOR ACQUIRING THE OBJECTIVES :

I) CAD Model :

A Sphere & Plate components are given from design team. We have to import that model file through Geometry selection option and followingly check the component whether its proper one or not. We have only a one fourth of the plate & one eighth of Sphere for which reduce the computational time, reduce space storage and also simplify the problem.

Once Model has been imported, it has been looks like as shown in the below image.

II) Material Adding :

In this case, we gonna use two different materials which are Structural Steel for Sphere and Structural Steel Non Linear material for Plate.

i) Structural Steel :

ii) Structural Steel Non Linear :

III) Create a Symmetry along the axis :

As we know that, we have an only One fourth of the plate & Only One Eighth of the sphere. We have to apply symmetrical option to the component for which represents the complete model by using from available portion

i) Symmetrical in along the X axis :

ii) Symmetrical in along the Z axis :

IV) Connection :

Create a new manual contact region, select the sphere outer surface as a contact body & select the plate top surface as a Target Body.

Keep Frictional as a contact type with coefficient of friction is 0.74.

Apart from that, keep default option which are available.

Once we made contacts are in proper manner, then it will looks like as shown in the below image.

V) Meshing :

Basically, To divide the entire model into infinitesimal control volume, that frame work is called Meshing. This process is called Discritization. This FEM is widely used for solving partial differential equation in different physical field such as Structural problem, Heat transfer problem, Fluid flow problem, Electro magnetic Analysis & Acoustics Analysis.

Number of Nodes = 5728

Number of Elements = 1770

A Sphere component is meshed with Tetrahedrons elements.

A Plate component is meshed with Hexahedral elements.

VI) Analysis Settings :

Number of Time steps is 4.

Solver type is Direct.

Keep switch to ON position for Large Deflection.

Keep default setting apart from that.

Boundary Conditions :

i) Fixed Support :

By Using Fixed Support option to fix the plate, by result all possible degree of freedoms are constraint for the plate..

ii) Displacement :

Inorder to pressing on the plate, we have to provide the displacement for the sphere along the Negative Y direction from 0 to -4 mm with interval of 4 Number of steps and keep constant for x & z direction.

Select the top face of the sphere and apply on it.

RESULTS :

Equivalent Elastic Strain :

Equivalent Plastic Strain :

Directional Deformation :

CONCLUSION :

A material is returns to original shape after when we removing the loads from the component. That deformation is called Elastic deformation. Rather Let say, a applied load doesn't increase beyond its Elastic limit for that material.

A material is not returns to original shape after when we removing the loads from the component. That deformation is called Plastic Deformation or Permanent deformation. Rather Let say, a applied load is increase beyond its Elastic limit for that material.

In this case, plate material got permanent deformation even after removing load on it. So we can easily conclude, a given plate material is obtained permanent deformation or Plastic deformation.
