Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

SPHERE PRESSING ON A PLATE

Objective: -

  1. Perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate. We have to use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear.
  2. Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by us.

Procedure: -

  • Import the geometry and assign structural steel NL material to the plate. We will run the analysis on a quarter portion of the sphere and plate model.

  • We need to insert symmetry regions along XY and YZ plane.
  • Go to Symmetry>Symmetry region and choose Z and X as symmetry normal respectively.

Contacts-

  • The sphere is provided as the contact face and the plate is assigned as the target face.Friction contact is provided between the surfaces with a frictional coefficient of 0.75.We can use the "Roymech useful tribology tables" to find out the standard frictional values.

Meshing-

We used element size of 1mm to mesh the model.

Boundary conditions-

  • Fixed support is provided to the bottom face of the plate to avoid any kind of movement.

  • Displacement is provided to the sphere and the values are feed in four steps.

Following analysis settings were applied to achieve the solution:

Number of steps- 4

Auto time stepping- Program controlled

Solver type- Direct

Large deflection- ON

Results: -

Equivalent stress

Equivalent elastic strain-

Directional deformation along Y-axis-

CONCLUSION-

  • A displacement of 4mm is provided to ensure plastic deformation on plate.
  • Directional deformation of 0.331mm along Y-axis is achived.
