Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
Sphere Pressing on a plate
Objective: To run the simulation using material Structural steel for sphere & Structural steel NL for plate.
Case Setup & Execution:
- In the initial step open ansys workbench & click on engineering material, select structural steel & structural steel NL for the simulation.
- Now import the geometry from your saved folder and open the same in space claim to check if all the points and surface are proper.
- Update the model and edit the same.
- Delete all the generated contacts and insert a manual contact. Select the sphere part as contact and plate as target. From the web select the friction value for various material and enter the same.
- In the mesh choose the size as per requirement to generate accurate results. In this model we have provided a mesh size of 1.75mm. The mesh look much fine and can generate precise results.
- Next in analysis setting select no of steps to 4. It’s because we have displace the sphere to 4 mm and then return to the original position. Make sure that large deflection is on.
- Insert displacement, select top surface of sphere and enter the value to 4mm with each step increment. Insert fix support and select the bottom surface of the plate.
- Now click on symmetry and insert two symmetry region and select the axis accordingly.
- Next in solution add the results to be generated such as equivalent stress, strain, deformation etc. Hit solve and let the solver complete the solution.
Results & Conclusion:
In this we have provide displacement to sphere. We are observing the results and looking at the plastic deformation of the plate.

From the above results we can see that deformation of the material is 3.842mm & maximum stress generated is 309.29Mpa.To run the simulation we have to select nonlinear material plate so that plastic deformation takes place. If we use the same material then deformation won’t occur or the solution won’t converge. The results also show that how to choose material depending on various parameters and various stress generated on the plate & evaluate if the same can be used in further assembly or not.
