Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

With all the above dimensions and the load given a stress concentration simulation for both the cases have been done and all the files are attached with initials starting for Case_1 and similarly for Case_2.

Attached Files are as follows:

1. Geometry

2. Stress Analysis

3.Deformation Anaslysis

4.Zip file of entire data.

Solution :

Case 1 : Plate with Single hole

Case 2 : Plate with multiple holes

1. If we compare the above two Cases , its been seen that in case1 i.e plate with single hole the max stress developed is 1.2274MPA & in the case2 i.e plate with multiple holes has a decreased stress value of 0.58094MPA. There is marginal 50% drop in stress value in Case2 with that of Case1 . Similarly the deformation in the case1 is more than that of case2 .

2.From analysis point of view its been clearly seen that the Case 2 has an higher edge when compared with values of Case1. So from selection point of view after all the analysis the Case2 plate with more number of holes is preferred as the values of stress and deformation are less than that of Case1 . Also due to more holes the weight of the object will also reduced that will indeed be helpful if used in any of the assembly.

3.From a manufacturing point of view Case1 will be more preferable as the cycle time of manufacturing a plate with single hole is much less than manufacturing holes that are at offset to center as shown in Case 2. If the structure is been manufactured in batch then definetly the Case1 plate will have an higher edge as it saves multiple operations and time.

4.Report - Values define that structure with multiple holes are much safe and better but as we increase more discontinuity in any structure its been observed that stress concetration factor increases . So this may result in propogation of cracks and failure. But its always advised that before selecting any structure its important to look for other parameter such as temp, Pressure , Max load applied. Because all this factors reduced the unnecessary operations on any structure and indeed save cost , cycle time etc.
