Week 5:- Rest Unit & Clamp Unit Design Challenge

CLAMP AND REST UNIT:

AIM

To create a clamp and the rest unit for the given part.

INTRODUCTION

For the rest unit we have to design the following 

• Rest Arm
• Shim
• Blade
• Riser

A clamp unit is designed to clamp or hold the car panel with NC block or Mylars or Rest by using a pneumatic clamp cylinder.

For the clamp unit the following parts are to be designed

• Clamp Arm
• Rest Arm
• Shim 
• Blade (If necessary)
• Riser
• Cylinder (Standard One)

DESIGN METHODOLOGY

REST ARM

A rest is a NC block , which is fixed to the unit to support the car panel , also it resists the clamping force of the finger and thus clamp the car panel.

CLAMP ARM

Clamp arm is a bought out part , to which all the movable parts are fixed .

In general clamp arm is part of clamp cylinder.

Clamp arms are different for different bore of the cylinder.

Clamp arms are available in different hole pitch.

Clamp arms are available as 1)Middle Arm - A10 2)Right Arm - A11 3) Left Arm - A12

CLAMP CYLINDER 

It is a pnuematic device works with pressurised air .

The clamp cylinder is used to open and close the parts fixed to the clamp arm .

Clamp cylinder are bought out parts , some of the manufacturers are Tunkers and Destaco.

Clamp cylinders are in general 40, 50, 63 and 80 bore capacity.

Opens up to 135 degree for horizontal clamp mounting .

Opens up 105 degree for vertical clamp mounting.

SHIM

Shim is a set of thin plates (4mm, 2 mm, 1mm, 0.5 mm, 0.25mm) that are used to adjust the gap or used for a better fit.

Shimming can be of thickness 5mm, 8mm, or 10mm. in case no proper fitting between mylar and Panel due to manufacturing errors then this error can be removed using shims. 

BLADE

The plate which connects Riser to the Clamp cylinder or Rest arm is named as Blade.

This plate plays an important role in building the unit.

The plate can be of any shape. But we need to keep in mind that the plate should be as compact as possible.

RISER

The part which is mounted on the base plate and holds a clamp or pin cylinder on it, is called Riser.

Riser can be Standard Part or manufactured part, it varies from project to project.

A riser can be a Single part or welded part. Standard risers also have various shapes and sizes.
