Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly
Surface Wrap on Automotive Assembly
Aim:
The aim of this project is to surface wrap an automotive powertrain. The CAD models given are 1) Engine 2) Gearbox 3) Transmission
Objective:
- The objectives of this project are
- To check for geometrical errors and delete surfaces that are unwanted for the surface wrap.
- Merge all 3 models and perform surface wrap after clearing geometry.
- The target length for Wrap should be set to 3 mm.
Procedure:
Upload the engine file onto ANSA, first we perform topo-clean up on the engine.
The engine file has a lot of excess parts which are not necessary for the surface wrap. We can select the main important parts in PID mode and hide them. Now we can see the majority of the excess rings and pipes which are not needed can be deleted by universal delete option. Belts, unconnected rings can be deleted
Creating the surfaces in unconnected surfaces and clearing the outer geometrical errors which is enough for surface wrapping.
After clearing errors in the outer surface in engine part we can save it and open transmission part to clear errors.

Remove the triple, single cons, rings, curves etc.., After performing topo-clean, we need to check the unconnected surfaces presented in transmission. After the checkup we can save it and open the gearbox
GEARBOX
In this file there are only a few errors in the outer surface which can be done by TOPO. After this step we can merge the three parts by using FILE>>merge option
After performing merge, we can now perform surface wrap. But first, we need to delete the excess PID created and can be done by compress option and only the required PIDs can be there.
Create a new wrap octree>>constant and upon double-clicking it a pop-up window appears, where we are required to give mesh parameters. Here we have given name as full wrap, mesh length as 3mm.

Click compress button to clear all unwanted pid’s
Click on contents and select all the pid's present and click on the green arrow near and click ok

Here we can see the wrap octree is loaded and is ready.

Click on RUN button this will take few mins to create surface wrap
RESULTS: -
We can see the Volume created inside the parts

Conclusions: -
The surface wrap is achieved on the given powertrain components with a total of 766968 elements. The surface is easier to perform since it does not depend on the quality of the wrap on each material as we are not interested in physics in the body. An effective surface wrap is achieved on the given body for a given mesh length of 3mm.
