Challenge

Week 5 Bending of iPhone

Aim-

For this challenge, simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below

Case 1: Simulate the model as it is given in the video

Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Stress, MPa Number of Cycles, N
225 10000
175 100000
143 1000000
110 10000000
80 100000000

Results and Deliverables

  • Obtain the directional deformation for the model
  • Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL
  • Life of the Aluminium alloy for the case
  • Compare the results and present with the conclusion.

Procedure-

1) Open engineering Data and add polyehtlene from general matrials and alumimun alloy NL from Non linear matrials , duplicate the polyethlene and rename it as glass, now change the density to 2520kg/m3, youngs modulas to 7.2e10 Pa, poisoons ratio to 0.2, tensile and compressivee yeild strengths to 2.5e8 pa and Tensile Ultimate Strength to 4.6e8 Pa

2) Import the model and open space claim, look for any abnormality, if everthing is correct close the geometry

3) Open Model and rename the parts as follows

Assign screen as glass, frame as aluminum alloy NL, insides as polyethlene

now select all the fingers and 1 pushing finger and change theirnstiffnes behavior to rigid

now go to connections and delete any underdefined connection, now change all the connections to frictionless except the onw between screen and frame

now add body to ground fixed supports to all the fingers and body to ground translation to pushing fingers

Go to Mesh and add a face sizing of 4mm to bottom of frame and contact area between pushing fingers

in analysis settings

add 8 steps, solver type to direct, weak spring program controled, large deflection on, in non linear control add stabalization to constant of 0.1 ratio, and activation for 1st time step to yes, in outputs turn everthing to yes

add fixed support to frame sides below finger, constrain the sides of frame by adding displacement of 0 to X and Z direction, add 2 joint loads for displacement in Y direction

in solution add directional deformation in y direction for frame, stress for whole model, stress for frame only, strain for frame only, force reaction on contact region between frame and pushing finger and contact tool for pressure

CASE 2

New position of fingers
