Week 5 Battery characteristics using drive cycle
Aim - To Simulate the Battery using UDDS Drive cycle
Components - Signal Builder Block, Controlled current source, Generic Battery, Bus selector, Scope
Simulink Model
- Signal Builder Block
The UDDS drive cycle contains data w.r.t time and speed. As the signal builder block does not support
profile w.r.t time and speed we need to convert it into an appropriate current profile.
Creating an excel sheet with current and time data and importing it into the signal builder block.
After importing the excel sheet into the signal builder we get the current profile as bellow.
- Controlled current source
The output from the signal builder block is connected to the controlled current source. This source act as a load across the battery.
It charges and discharges the battery in the same way as the vehicle accelerates and decelerates on the road.
- Generic Battery
This generic battery is a lithium-ion type. The -ve terminal of the battery is connected to the +ve terminal of the controlled
current source and the +ve terminal of the battery to -ve of the controller.
The m port is the measurement port used to find the SOC, Voltage, and current of the battery. The parameters of the battery
are kept to default.
- Bus Selector
Bus selector basically acts as an interface between the battery and the scope it outputs necessary ports from the measurement port
of the battery to the scope.
- Scope
The scope is used to visualize the result and the output from the model.
Observation/Result
By running the Simulink model we observed a frequent charging and discharging of the battery.
The simulation was run for 1371 seconds. The SOC of the battery is 100 initially with current being 0 and the starting voltage is 8.41V.
For the entire drive cycle, the battery state of charge was reduced to about 96%
Effect of Regenerative Braking on the battery is shown below
In this graph, we observe an effect of declaration in the vehicle to the battery, when the vehicle is
braking the kinetic energy is stored in the battery the motor acts as a generator, the voltage in the battery increases which
charges the battery back again this improves the SOC and overall efficiency of the vehicle.
