Week 4 Session 5

Question:

Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V. Likewise come up with different applications

Answer:

Power converters are essential components in electric vehicles (EVs) as they play a crucial role in controlling and converting electrical power from the battery to the electric motor and other auxiliary systems. Here are some of the key applications of power converters in electric vehicles:

  1. Battery charging: Power converters are used to convert AC power from the charging station to DC power that can be stored in the battery.

  2. Motor control: Power converters are used to control the speed and torque of the electric motor by adjusting the voltage and current supplied to the motor.

  3. DC-DC conversion: Power converters are used to step down the high voltage DC power from the battery to a lower voltage that is suitable for powering the auxiliary systems, such as the lights, radio, and air conditioning.

  4. Regenerative braking: Power converters are used to convert the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle back into electrical energy that can be stored in the battery during regenerative braking.

  5. On-board charger: Power converters can be used as on-board chargers to convert AC power from the charging station to DC power that can be stored in the battery.

  6. Inverter: Power converters are used as inverters to convert DC power from the battery to AC power that can be used to power the motor.

  7. Power conditioning: Power converters are used to condition the power from the battery or the charging station to ensure that it meets the requirements of the electric motor and other auxiliary systems.

The Equipument lists here

  1. Horn: The horn in an electric vehicle requires a low voltage DC supply (typically less than 10V). A DC-DC converter can be used to step down the high voltage DC power from the battery to the low voltage required for the horn.

  2. Headlights: The headlights in an electric vehicle typically require a high voltage DC supply (12V or higher). A DC-DC converter can be used to step down the high voltage DC power from the battery to the appropriate voltage required for the headlights.

  3. Power steering: The power steering in an electric vehicle requires a variable voltage DC supply to adjust the steering assist based on driving conditions. A DC-DC converter can be used to provide the variable voltage DC supply required for the power steering.

  4. Air conditioning: The air conditioning in an electric vehicle requires a high voltage AC supply. An inverter can be used to convert the DC power from the battery to the high voltage AC power required for the air conditioning system.

  5. Battery management: Power converters are used in the battery management system of an electric vehicle to monitor the state of charge, balance the cells, and regulate the charging and discharging of the battery.

  6. DC-AC conversion: Power converters are used to convert the DC power from the battery to AC power that can be used to power other systems in the vehicle, such as the infotainment system or the charging ports.
