Week 4 Session 5
POWER CONVERTERS APPLICATIONS:
- Power converters are essential components of electric vehicles (EVs) that convert electrical energy between different voltage and current levels to power the motor , auxiliary system and charging infrastructure.
- they are three main types of power converer in evs : AC-DC coverters ( rectifiers),DC-DC converters, and DC -AC converters(inverters)
- AC-DC converters are used to convert the AC power from the grid to DC power for charging the battery or supplying the DC-link.
- DC-DC converters are used to interface different DC sources or loads with different voltage levels, such as the battery, the fuel cell, the supercapacitors, or the low-voltage onboard loads.
- DC-AC converters ARE USED to convert the DC power from the battery or the DC link to AC POWER for driving the motor.
- horn that requires DC and less than 10V can be powered by a unidirectional DC-DC converter that steps down the voltage from the battery or the DC-link.
Similarly, other applications of power converters in EVs are:
- A bidirectional DC-DC converter that can transfer power between the battery and the supercapacitors during acceleration or regenerative braking.
- A multiport DC-DC converter that can integrate multiple sources such as PV, fuel cell, battery, and grid for fast charging or backup power.
- A DC-AC inverter that can control the speed and torque of the motor by varying the frequency and amplitude of the output voltage.
