Week 4 Session 5
Three type of converter used in Electric vechile
- DC to DC converter
- DC to AC converter
- AC to DC converter
DC to DC converter
It is a electronic circuit it convert one level of dc voltage to another level, used for step up and step down process.
This type of converter is called chopper.
The electric components in the vechile are vary in the voltage requirement, the most of the components running on lower voltage like radio, head lamp, air conditioner, inbuild computer etc.
It can be a unidirectional or bidirectional.
Many of the components are bidirectional, allowing the power battery to the inverter, which rotates the motor.
When decelarating, the vechile momentum turns the motor and the motor will act as a generator, the regenerative power go to the inverter and charge the battery .
The DC to DC converter convert higher voltage dc power from the traction battery pack into lower level dc power needed to run the accessories and recharge the auxilliary battery.
DC to AC converter
It is used to change the DC input voltage to symmetric AC output voltage of desired magnitude and frequency.
This type of converters also called as inverter.
This inverter can change the speed of the motor rotation by changing the frequency of the alternative current.
When the vechile has to be accelerated, the acceleration pedal sending a signal to the controller which adjust the speed by changing the frequency of the ac power from the inverter to the motor
AC to DC converter
It take harmonic AC input converted into DC output
It concerted are also known as rectifiers.
The converters are used in EV/HEV mainly in on-board charging purpose, the charging station used AC power to charge the vechile and the battery stores DC power.
