Week 4 Session 5

Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V? Likewise, come up with different applications

HEV block diagram

EV Block diagram

  • AC to DC = Rectifier: It converts AC to unipolar (DC) current

in this diagram or all hybrid electrical vehicles we are using a generator this generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy from AC. but we dc form so converted into AC to DC then only using this rectifier

In EV systems AC to DC, a rectifier is not required because a battery charger takes that part

  • DC to AC = Inverter: It converts DC to AC of desired frequency and voltage

suppose we are using an AC-motor in this part as an important part working on the EV system but suppose we are not using an AC-motor at that time in this part also no need for the EVs

  • DC to DC = Chopper: It converts constant to variable DC or variable DC to constant DC

two mean things we need chopper's first one is Nominal voltages of the battery packs of EV and HEV typically range from 200 volts to 340 volts. The use of high-voltage battery packs requires some kind of power conditioning to provide 12 volts to 12-volt electrical loads. There would always be a need for high-voltage-to-low-voltage power conversion because some loads, such as headlights and microprocessors, require low voltages. in this situation we are using buck converter but we are using boost converters below conditions Boosting the voltage level of the battery such as that it matches the level of the
DC bus voltage for driving the AC motor inverter if the traction motor is an AC motor. Motor propulsion if the traction motor is a DC motor.

For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V?

In this application, we are using a buck converter because of low voltage applications like vise Head lights and Back lights.

Air conditioner load, and airbag Ext... in this all, we are using the DC-DC converter as per load operation voltage we are using step-up converter or step-down converter
