Week 4 Session 5
There are FOUR type of power converter available. There are two type of converter used in EV
1.AC-AC converter
2.AC to DC converter
3.DC-DC converter.
4.DC-AC converter(inverter).
1.AC-AC converter
We require a particular voltage and particular frequency for operating some special devices or machines. For speed control of induction motors AC to AC converters (Cycloconverters) is used majorly. For obtaining a desired AC power supply from the actual power supply, we need some converters called AC to AC converters.
4.DC-AC converter(inverter)
DC to AC converters is mainly designed for changing a DC Power supply to an AC power supply. using in house inverter system.
Two type of converter used in EV:
2.AC-DC converter: Battery charging
AC-DC converter also known as rectifier. This is the most common charging method for electric vehicles today and most chargers use AC power.
- During charging battery AC voltage is converted into DC voltage
- AC voltage converted into DC voltage as per the battery voltage and on board charger specification.
3.DC-DC converter:
DC-DC converter is converting unregulated DC voltage to Regulated DC voltage.
Example: battery voltage is 48 V that 48DC converted from AC voltage using rectifier. But that voltage is unregulated voltage also that is used for only battery charging. But in EV there are small DC power equipment’s available like 12V or less than 12V.For that purpose 48DC to lower voltage DC converted using DC-DC converter.
Lower voltage applications in EV:
1.Car-Airconditioning system
2.Musical system
3.Head light
4.door locking system
5.Airbags,wipers
