Week 4 Session 5
Power converter: It consists of power electronic componenets and a controller, which transforms voltages and currents from one level to another.
The types of power coverters used in an EV are:
1. AC-DC converters
2. DC-DC converters
3. DC-AC converters
In an EV, power converters are mainly used for following applications:
- On board chargers
- Traction Inverters
- Motor Drives
- Auxiliary systems
Applications of AC-DC converter (Rectifier):
A typical DC-AC converter is normally called as Rectifier. It is normally used in the charging systems to convert input AC supply into output DC supply.
Applications of DC-DC converters:
1. On board charger i.e. Battery to charging station compatibility
If the charging station is having AC supply, then on board chrger will convert the AC supply into DC supply. But this DC volatge level may not be suitable for the traction bettery. So, a DC-DC converter is used to convert output of charger to a level suitable for treaction battery and auxiliary battery.
2. Auxiliary loads - Following are the few examples of
- Car Air-conditioning system
- Music system
- Head Lights
- Dimmer
3. High voltage tolow volatge battery link
4. Between low volateg battery and high volatage loads
5. Accumulating different energy sources such as ultracapacitor, fuel cell and battery, to give desired output.
Applications of DC-AC converters (Inverters):
A typical DC-AC converter is normally called as an Inverter and it is used for control of AC motor, since it generates variable voltage and variable frequency supply. It is placed beteen battery and AC motor.
