Week 4: Project - Transient simulation of flow over a throttle body
Transient simulation of flow over a throttle body
OBJECTIVE :
To simulate flow through a elbow pipe with a throttle valve inside. This is a transient simulation as the valve inside will be moving
PROCEDURE :
1.A CAD model of the elbow joint with a throttle valve imported into converge studio
2.A design diagnosis is run for any errors
3.Boundaries were flagged according to the problem specification
4.Rotating motion was provided for the throttle , with parameters like centre of rotation and axis of rotation
5.The following solver parameters have been used during case setup
CASE SETUP
1.Inlet pressure = 150000.0 Pa
2.Inlet Temperature =300K
3.Outllet Pressure = 100000.0Pa
4.Outlet temperature = 300K
5.End time =0.01s
6.Turbulence model
7.Min time step = 1e-9
8.Max time step = 1.0
9.Base grid size =0.002m
10.Fixed embedding scale =3
11.Fixed embedding embedded layers =2
12.Rotation angle = 0 to 25 degrees between 0ms ad 2ms ,stay at 25degrees between 2ms and 4ms,25to0 degrees between 4ms and 8ms and stay at 0 degrees till the end.

OBSERVATIONS :
1. The flow is throttling behind the valve
2. The throttling causes pressure build up
3. Velocity behind the throttle also drops drastically
4. Highly turbulent flow can be observed after the valve ,this could be because the valve is changing its position over time
5. The inlet and outlet mass flow rates stabilize as shown in the graph ,but anomalies can be found at 2 and 4ms .this is because the valve is changing its position.
