REPORT ON PIN UNIT DESIGN
INTRODUCTION:
The pin unit of the fixture unit is one the components which holds the car panel while the operations are being done.Certain hole sapces are provided in the sheet metal part or the caf panel for the fixture to be assembled following the 3-2-1 principle rule.The pin unit is itself an assembly of several components that contribute for its stability of holding the car panel.There are basically two types of pin units:
A. REST PIN UNIT: In the rest pin unit the pin is at rest and does not move.
B. retractable PIN UNIT: In the retractable pin unit the pin can be retracted using a cylinder.
The pin unit consists of:
- Pin
- Pin retainer
- Block
- Shim
- Blade
- Riser
- Retractable cylinder (in retractable unit)
The design strategy of each component of the pin unit is standard and basic principle is to include as many as standard components in your unit design,which saves a lot of time and is cost effective.In this report the design methodology of each component is disscused briefly
1. PIN:
The pin is the basic first component in the pin unit and it is of two kinds:
A. Circular pin
B. Diamond pin
They each have a collar with a slot which will support on the pin retainer to lock its rotation movement.The bottom it has the extended shaft with thread for the assembly of screw with the retainer.
2. PIN RETAINER:
Pin retainer is the component on which the pin sits.The pin retainer has dowel holes and one hole for the screw to fit with block.The distance betweem the dowel holes is nominally 30cm and the length of the block on face of the holes is 50cm,so that it is inline with the shims and block.
3. SHIMS:
Shims are thin blocks with thickness 0.5mm , 1mm and 2mm.The overall shim blocks assembly is of 5mm thickness.The shim blocks are supposed to be assembled in the two way directions for accurate positioning of the pin.

4. BLOCK:
Block is the component between the retainer and the blade/riser which enables the shimming in two directions as shown in the below picture.
5. BLADE:
The blade is the medeator component beteen the block and the reiser.It can be optional depending the type of riser you are using.If a simple rider id used then there is no necessicity for the blade but if the L type riser is beong used then a blade is required to support it.
6. RISER:
The riser is the stand which supports the whole the pin unit at a certain height fromthe base unit.We have a standard L type riser which is mostly used but we also simple riser can also be used as shown below picture.
Unlike the standard componets,we can actually modify and make our own simple design reducing its manufacturing costs simple in handling and servicability.
7. RETRACTBLE CYLINDER:
Retractable cylinder in retractable unit is of two types:
1. Single pin
2. Pneumatic
