Week 4- Challenge

OBJECTIVE:

  • To create a 1D element on the component with given cross-section and degree of freedom.

a. Rod element

b. Beam element

c. Bar element

  • Spring element

PROCEDURE:

  • In Hyperworks; to create a model select open hyperworks - opistruct and click ok.
  • Then go to File- new- select model or session and a new work bench opens.
  • To open a IGES file go to import solver deck - import geometry - file- Iges file.

  • To open midsurface go to Geometry - midsurface.
  • To create a 1d element we need to use midsurface option to seperate the two layers between the solid model.
  • Then click on the model to create a midsurface and extract the solid elements surface and the needed surface.
  • Delete the solid layer element leaving the midsurface and name them as top layer element(Bracket 1) and bottom layer element(Bracket 2).
  • Apply materials for Brackets 1&2 (Ex: steel), properties ( ex: thickness).

Element:-

  • To create any element we must create rigid joints Rbe2 & Rbe3 (Elements can be any line, area or solids).
  • Then apply nodes on the element using geometry - quick edit and use washer splash (ex: offset value) option to create offset to the required area.
  • Apply masses to the required rigid areas
  • The cross section to be connected are Rods, beam, bar.

a. Rod element:- with only translational DOF and RBE2 link

  • To create Rod element go to 1D - rods.
  • Then apply nodes on the element using geometry - quick edit and use washer splash (ex: offset value) option to create offset to the required area.
  • Click 1D - Rigids to create Rbe2 links; select create - claculate nodes - nodes (multinodes) and translational DOF [DOF1 (x), DOF2(y), DOF3(z)].
  • Go to hyperbeams; In hyperbeams select standard section - standrad section library (hyperbeam) - standard section type (thinwalled box).
  • Then click create to open hyperbeam view work bench.
  • In hyperbeam view work bench; select create - hyperbeam - thinwalled box (cross section)and apply the required dimension as a= 12 mm, b=10 mm, t= 0.75 mm.
  • After creating thinwalled box for rod click model view apply materials and properties for the rod cross section.
  • Create a node on the links to connect the rod element by clicking 1D- Rods - property - element type (ROD).

b. Beam element:- with all DOF and RBE3 link

  • To create Beam element go to 1D - bars.
  • Then apply nodes on the element using geometry - quick edit and use washer splash (ex: offset value) option to create offset to the required area.
  • Click 1D - Rbe3 to create Rbe3 links; select create - claculate nodes - nodes (multinodes) and translational and rotational DOF [DOF1 (x), DOF2(y), DOF3(z), DOF4 (x), DOF5(y), DOF6(z)].
  • Go to hyperbeams; In hyperbeams select standard section - standrad section library (hyperbeam) - standard section type (I Section).
  • Then click create to open hyperbeam view work bench.
  • In hyperbeam view work bench; select create - hyperbeam - I cross section and apply the required dimension as a= 8 m, b= 10mm, c= 8.5 mm, t1= 0.75 mm, t2= .6 mm, t3= .6 mm.
  • After creating I cross section for rod click model view and apply materials, properties for the I cross section (beam).
  • Create a node on the links to connect the rod element by clicking 1D- bars- click elements - property(BEAM) - element type (cbeam) - orientation (N1, N2, N3).

c. Bar element:- with only x and y DOFs With RBE3 link

  • To create Bar element go to 1D - bars.
  • Then apply nodes on the element using geometry - quick edit and use washer splash (ex: offset value) option to create offset to the required area.
  • Click 1D - Rbe3 to create Rbe3 links; select create - claculate nodes - nodes (multinodes) and translational and rotational DOF [DOF1 (x), DOF2(y), DOF4 (x), DOF5(y)].
  • Go to hyperbeams; In hyperbeams select standard section - standrad section library (hyperbeam) - standard section type (cross Section).
  • Then click create to open hyperbeam view work bench.
  • In hyperbeam view work bench; select create - hyperbeam - cross section and apply the required dimension as DIM1= 5 mm, Thickness DIM2= 1.2 mm, DIM3= 10 mm, Thickness DIM4= 1.2mm.
  • After creating cross section for rod click model view and apply materials, properties for the cross section (bar).
  • Create a node on the links to connect the rod element by clicking 1D- bars- click elements - property(bar) - element type (cbar) - orientation (N1, N2, N3).

SPRINGS:

  • To create spring element go to 1D - spring.
  • Click 1D - rigid to create Rbe2 links; select create - claculate nodes - nodes (multinodes) and translational and rotational DOF [DOF1 (x), DOF2(y), DOF3(z), DOF4 (x), DOF5(y), DOF6(z)].
  • Create a node on the links to connect the spring element.

Conclusion:-

Thus the 1D elements is created by the following component with given cross-section and DOF element size requirments.
