Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
Objective: To simulate weld joints as per given gemoetry to verify the strength of weld joints for different materials of plates and welds.
Set up procedure:
- Provided geometry has to be imported in Space Claim GUI
- In this exercise, we have to deal with different materials for different cases. So, required materials has to be added from engineering materials tab
- Parts are renamed as plates and ribs
- Contacts between plates and ribs are set as frictional with a friction coefficient of 0.2
- Mesh size of 7mm to 3mm was given and results are obtained for structural steel. Paramteric method is followed to get desired results. Mesh size is provided as input. Required results such as equivalent stress, directional deformation and equivalent strain are provided as output.
- Analysis is setup in single step. All holes in big plate is fixed. Load is provided as per case.
- Forces is applied in y direction along all faces of hole in small plate
- Required results are added in solution tab
- Simulation set up is solved and required results are retrieved
Results Discussion:
Parametric chart generation is performed for structural steel as plates and weld material and for load of 12000 N. Mesh sizes of 7mm to 3mm is given as input parameter and output parameters such as equivalent stress, directional deformation and equivalent strain are tabulated.
Mesh size vs Maximum Equivalent Stress
Mesh size vs Maximum Directional deformation
Mesh size vs Maximum equivalent elastic strain:
Case 1 : Stainless steel material for plates and welds and Load of 15000 N. Mesh size of 3 mm is used.
Equivalent stress:
Maximum value - 418.34 MPa
Directional deformation:
Maximum value - 0.32541 mm
Equivalent stress of welds:
Maximum value - 325.03 MPa
Case 2 : Stainless steel material for plates, Aluminium alloy (high strength, wrought) for welds and Load of 15000 N. Mesh size of 3 mm is used.
Equivalent stress:
Maximum value - 431.6 MPa
Directional deformation:
Maximum value - 0.36031 mm
Equivalent stress of welds:
Maximum value - 258.16 MPa
Equivalent elastic strain:
Maximum value - 0.003501
Case 3: Brazing simulation. Stainless steel material is assigned for plates. Copper alloy is assigned for welds. Load of 15000 N is given. Mesh size of 3 mm is used.
Equivalent stress:
Maximum value - 443.63 MPa
Directional deformation:
Maximum value- 0.36031 mm
Equivalent stress in weld:
Maximum value - 281.69 MPa
Equivalent elastic strain:
Maximum value - 0.0035246
Conclusion:
Welds are subjected to maximum stress in case 1 and minimum stress in case 2. Hence case 2 is safest among all three cases under discussion. Plates of stainless steel welded with aluminium alloy material is safe.
Learnings:
In this assignment, I understood how to create parametric charts for different input and output parameters. I understood that analysis could be setup even in a single step.
