Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Answer:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
Advisor Tool:
ADVISOR, NREL's Advanced Vehicle Simulator is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with MATLAB and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles.
Introduction:
Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR) was first developed in November 1994 at the National Renewable EnergyLaboratory.It was designed as an analysis tool to assist theUS Department of Energy (DOE) in developing technologies for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) through the HybridElectric Vehicle Propulsion System contracts with Ford,General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler. Its primary role isto highlight the system-level interactions of hybrid andelectric vehicle components and their impacts on the vehicleperformance and fuel economy
ADVISOR was first released publicly via the Internet in September 1998.The number of public users of the software tool has grownsteadily from a small group of about 30 initial partners to a group of over 4500 individuals that have downloaded thesoftware. The majority (68%) of ADVISOR users aremembers of industry while 29% are members of academia
with the remaining 3% representing government entities.
This large user community provides feedback necessary toimprove the models and component data to be used withinthe models.Since first introduced, several updated versionsof the software have been periodically distributed via the Internet. ADVISOR Version 3.2 is the latest version of thesoftware.This paper will discuss the fundamental approach used tomodel vehicle systems in ADVISOR. A description ofADVISOR’s capabilities and limitations will be presented.
ADVISOR has three types of power source models that canbe included in a vehicle model. These include an internalcombustion engine, a fuel cell system, and an energy storagesystem. The general modeling approach employed for eachof these systems will be described briefly. The paper willalso highlight typical applications of the tools to real systemsanalysis problems.
Limitation:
- Intuitive, easy-to-use graphical interface Fast solutions
- Distributed as open source code Customizable
- Scalable component models
- Good customer support, software maintenance, and documentation
- Free and publicly available
- Highly parameterized models
- Provides robust solutions
- Modular architecture.
Answer:
Here I Load ADVISOR TOOL from the matlab command window and load EV_default_in file and change cargo weight to 500 and hit continue to load the drive cycle page.
Vehicle input:

And here we need to use FTP based cycle select the following and hit run..

Results:
Thus we can see that for 3 numbers of cycles at the given conditions ,the vehicle can travel for only 11 miles ..
so the reason if we increase the number of cycles then the vehicle can travel above 45km.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
Answer:
Vehicle inputl;
- The number of battery is increased from default 45 to 50 check for the usage
- This also resulted in the increase the overall weight of the vehicle.

Plots:

Result :
After changing the battery capacity,
r
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Answer:
Vehicle Input:
Toyota prius;

Plots:

Input:

Test 1:
speed at 10kmph for 50 seconds:
Gradeability = 34.4%

Test 2:
speed at 20kmph for 50 seconds:
Gradeability = 23.5%

Test 3:
speed at 40kmph for 50 seconds:
Gardeability = 15.8%

Result:
