Week 3 - 2D meshing for Sheet metal

ANSA ANALYSIS REPORT OF THE FRONT HOOD (B SURFACE) OF A CAR

OBJECTIVE

To create a 2D mesh for the B surface panel of a car using the following steps

  • Initially understand the given component and its purpose.
  • Cleanup the geometry using tools checks options and fix the topology errors too.
  • Generate the mid surface by choosing the best option.
  • Create the mesh on the mid surface and clear the Quality errors
  • Apply the thickness to the midsurface and submit the model.

CHALLENGE MODEL PROVIDED:

PROCEDURE:

VISUAL INSPECTIONS AND GEOMETRY CLEANUP:

  • Perform a visual check of the provided model for any geometry errors like missed or hollow faces, overleaping surfaces and collapsed surfaces.
  • Using Tools -> checks option, check for sharp edges, unchecked faces, overlapped faces, triple cons, collapsed cons, single cons, needle faces.
  • Fix all the error automatically with fix option.
  • Sometimes have to fix the errors manually using topo, release, and edit surface option.

MID SURAFACING:

  • Measure the thickness of the given model over multiple areas. (Measured 0.75)
  • Selected the offset surface and enter the half value of the thickness (0.75/2) and use the negative sign if the generating surface arrow is away from the model.
  • Reason: since the geometry has many distorted areas, I fixed the surface error on a single side and made offset of the same to reduce the working time.

MESH GENERATION:

  • Generate hotpoints as per the mesh element size under mesh -> perimeters-> length.
  • Create 2D mesh over the generated mid surface using batch or best mesh options.
  • Fix the quality errors using reconstruct option under shell mesh.
  • Use split, swap, join elements for manual quality error corrections.
  • Shell mesh -> smooth gives more even sized elements for the mesh area.
  • Reduce unnecessary tria elements and opposite tria and avoid tria elements touching eachother.
  • Apply thickness to the mid surface and submit the model.

RESULT:

Mid surface is generated for a sheetmetal component using various options available in ANSA. Performed topological cleanup. Mesh flow is achieved using Reconstruct, smooth, fix quality, split, swap, join, move options in mesh. Applied Quality criteria and achieved that in the meshed model. Thus preprocessing of is done successfully in ANSA.
