Week 3.2 - 2R Robotic Arm Challenge
1. Introduction
In this project, I successfully implemented a MATLAB program to simulate the forward kinematics of a 2R robotic arm. The primary objective was to create an engaging animation of the arm's movement and share it on YouTube. This report provides a step-by-step explanation of the code, highlights encountered errors, the solutions devised, and includes screenshots for clarity.
2. Code for matlab2023b
% Plot the robotic arm
plot([0, L1 * cos(theta1_vals(i)), x], [0, L1 * sin(theta1_vals(i)), y], 'LineWidth', 2);
hold on;
plot(x, y, 'ro', 'MarkerSize', 10);
% Set axis limits
axis([-3, 3, -3, 3]);
% Add labels and title
xlabel('X-axis');
ylabel('Y-axis');
title('2R Robotic Arm Forward Kinematics Simulation');
% Pause for a short duration to create animation effect
pause(0.1);
% Clear previous plot to update for the next frame
clf;
end
% Save the animation as a GIF file (optional)
animationFileName = '2R_Robotic_Arm_Forward_Kinematics_Animation.gif';
saveas(gcf, animationFileName, 'gif');
% Display a message indicating successful completion
disp('Forward Kinematics Simulation and Animation completed.');
Explanation:
This code implements the forward kinematics simulation for a 2R robotic arm using MATLAB. The joint angles, link lengths, and animation parameters are defined. The animation is created by updating the plot in a loop, resulting in a dynamic representation of the robotic arm's movement.
3. Errors Faced
3.1 Error 1: Undefined Variable 'numFrames'
Explanation:
The 'Undefined Variable' error occurred because 'numFrames' was used before it was defined. The solution involved initializing 'numFrames' at the beginning of the code.
3.2 Error 2: Plotting Function Undefined
Explanation:
An error occurred due to a missing plotting function. The solution involved checking the MATLAB documentation and correcting the function call.
4. Solutions
4.1 Solution to Error 1
I resolved the 'Undefined Variable' error by adding the following line at the beginning of the code:
numFrames = 100;
4.2 Solution to Error 2
For the 'Plotting Function Undefined' error, I realized I was using an outdated function. After consulting the MATLAB documentation, I replaced the function with the correct one:
plot(x, y, 'ro', 'MarkerSize', 10);
