Week 2 Session 7
Different architectures of HEV:
a.series architecture:
The gasoline engine is connected to the generator in series with the controller or to the motor directly. It can run on a battery as well as an ICE engine. which are connected to the controller. eg karma Fisker
Pros:
- Engine operates at maximum efficiency.
Con's:
- It has relatively lower transmission efficiency due to high loads compared to other hybrid vehicles.
b.parallel architecture: The ICE engine is connected in parallel with the transmission directly. Both are connected to wheels in parallel. It relies on regenerative braking for recharging the battery. eg. Honda Civic Hybrid
Pros:
- The electric motor can be used over short distances at low power which increases fuel economy, whereas the ICE engine can be used for long-distance at high power which helps to reduce range anxiety.
Con's:
- It has a complex design.
- It doesn't operate in the narrow range of rpm and the efficiency is low at a low rotation speed.
c.series parallel: The ICE engine is connected in parallel with the generator to recharge the battery and with the transmission. And also the electric motor is connected to the transmission in series. eg. Toyota Prius
Pros:
- It can operate in pure parallel mode avoiding the loss of the series path.
Con's:
- less Power
- maintenance cost is higher
