Week 2 Session 7

Three primary powertrain configurations—parallel continuously variable transmission (CVT) designs, series architectures, and discontinuously variable transmission (DVT) architectures—have spread as a result of the significant boom in the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) market sector. The HEV industry can boast the largest sales of CVT powertrains in particular. Despite this, a thorough investigation of the electrical losses in this arrangement and the addition of more energy-efficient electric components call into doubt the use of this powertrain as a benchmark for energy efficiency.

The key findings on this topic that can be found in the scientific literature are summarised in this essay. The two parallel powertrains' fuel usage is compared first, and then a quick summary of the key advancements in the electric component is given.

Some of the benefits to owning a hybrid car include:

  • They are environmentally-friendly
  • You save money
  • They’re quiet
  • They often require less maintenance

Some of the drawbacks to owning a hybrid car include:

  • Higher upfront costs
  • Maintenance can be expensive (when it’s needed)
  • They still produce fossil fuel emissions
