Week 2 Railwheel and Track
Week 2 Challenge – Rail wheel Challenge Report
Aim: Perform a static structural analysis on the Railwheel and Track setup and
Case 1: Multiply the bearing load by 5 times and compare the results with the load of 100000 N (As done in week 2 video). Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life under both the loads
Case 2: Implement a User defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.
Procedure:
- Select Static Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
- Choose material as structural steel, under Engineering Data.
- Under geometry tab, import the given Rail wheel track geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model.
- Then in Mechanical Module, assign a frictional connection between the wheel and track with 0.3 coefficient of friction.
- Also assign a frictionless contact between bearing and wheel.
- The track is made fixed with a fixed joint.
- Bearing is given a translational joint ensuring in moves on the railway track.
- The wheel is given a planar joint.
- A mesh element size is given 50mm.
- Face Sizing is done on wheel face and track face 35mm element size. This is done to generate a better mesh on the faces that are critical in the analysis.
- Under static structural tab, we add Joint- Displacement and enter the values of translational motion the wheel in 5 steps of 100mm each.
- Bearing load value is entered in the downward direction. (in 2 Cases)
- Total Deformation, Equivalent Elastic Strain and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
The same process is repeated for each case by changing the bearing load.

The formula for UDF for Total Displacement = Sqrt(Ux^2+Uy^2+Uz^2)

Conclusion:
We can infer the following data from each case.

Bearing Load (N) |
Equivalent Stress (MPa) |
Equivalent Strain |

The stress and strain increase by almost 4 times on multiplying the bearing load by 5 times. The other parameters such as Deformation and Fatigue life remain the same. We can see that the formula used in UDF for calculating Total Deformation matches with the requested Total Deformation.
