Week 2 Challenge

Question 1:

Alkaline Fuel Cell - First fuel cells developed. Primarily for space applications.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell - Backup & stationary power. Mobility & transport.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell - Has been used for all fuel cell uses: space, vehicles, backup & stationary power.

Direct Methanol Fuel Cell - Looks to be used for portable axillary power and battery charging systems.

Question 2:

Lithium Ion - E: 260-270 Wh/kg / P: 245-430 W/kg

Lead Acid - E: 25-35 Wh/kg / P: 150 W/kg

Nickel Cadmium - E: 50-75 Wh/kg / P: 150 W/kg

Ultracapacitor - E: 206 Wh/kg / P: 496 W/kg

Fuel Cell - E: 534 Wh/kg* / P: 2,000 W/kg*

*(Toyota Mirai data: https://www.toyota-europe.com/download/cms/euen/Toyota%20Mirai%20FCV_Posters_LR_tcm-11-564265.pdf

~5kg h2 on-board @ 33,600 Wh/kg = 168,000 Wh * est 70% efficiency of fuel cell = 117,600 Wh. Various internet sources state the fuel cell stack was 56 kg + tanks: 87.5 kg = 143 kg. Rounded to 150 kg + estimated 50 kg for supporting components/mounts = 200 kg + 10% for 'worst case margin' = 220 kg. 117,600 Wh on-board energy / 220 kg = 534 Wh/kg)
