Week 2 Bevel Gear Challenge
Objective: In this study Mesh grid dependency test of two worm gear has tested with the help of parametric study in structural analysis with output results of Equivalent stress, Deformation and Equivalent strain. This study is done with comparison result of different mesh size of 4mm,5mm and 6mm. This study is done in Ansys 2022
Introduction:
Mesh grid dependency is used to check the change the behaviour of result with changing the mesh size, by this way we can find that how much our mesh element selection is giving the approximation result with the prior selection of element size. This method give the optimized way to selection mesh element size.
Procedure:
1.Geometry
- Input the model as Step format in geometry

2.Material assignment
- Open Engineering Materials and select the required material.
- Structure steel is used as material in ANSYS of given material:

3.Meshing
- For Meshing the body element size =4mm
- For Contact surface meshing = 1.75mm

4.Boundary condition
- Contact creation
- Select the faces of gear teeth which will be in contact during simulation running
- Definition > type - Frictional
- Advanced > Formulation - Augmented Lagrange
- Geometric Modification > Interface Treatment - Adjust to touch
- Joint creation
- Create joint for Small gear by Connection > Right click on it > Select joint (firstly for Small gear and then for Large gear)
- Connection Type- Body Ground
- Type- Revolute

- Analysis Setting
- Apply number steps= 6

Insert joint load by right click on analysis setting
- Large gear setting with Definition > Type- Moment

Insert second joint load by right click on analysis setting
- Right gear setting with Definition > Type- Rotation

Results (output):
Mesh

Meshed Quality: According to mesh matrics the Quality vary from 0 to 1
0 for poor Quality element
1 for best Quality element
In our case Mesh of maximum element lies in between 0.7 to 0.9 so it is good as per Quality scale

Deformation
Max deformation= 47.8mm
Stress
Max stress= 5.2325 Mpa

Strain
Max Strain =3.3961e-5 mm/mm
Now compare these results for different mesh element size by parametric study by selecting the P symbol as above results which will required for comparing

Conclusion:
By comparing the result ,the study shows that deformation result and strain result has negligible change but stress result shows the considerable change , with decreased mesh size element stress result tends to maximum and appropriate result.
