Week 14 challenge

  • Objective: The objective of this project is to design the assembly of the Butterfly valve and apply the GD&T concepts to the various parts of the Butterfly Valve.
  • Name of the Parts:

1. Body

2. Shaft-Stem

3. Top Flange

4. Disc Plate

5. Lever Handle

6. Nut

  • Introduction -A Butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotational motion valve, that is used to stop, regulate, and start a flow. Butterfly valves are easy and fast to open. A 90° rotation of the handle provides a complete closure or opening of the valve. Large Butterfly valves are usually equipped with a so-called gearbox, where the handwheel by gears is connected to the stem. This simplifies the operation of the valve, but at the expense of speed.
  • Applications of Butterfly Valves -A Butterfly valve can be used in many different fluid services and they perform well in slurry applications. The following are some typical applications of Butterfly valves:
  1. Cooling water, air, gases, fire protection, etc.
  2. Slurry and similar services
  3. Vacuum service
  4. High-pressure and high-temperature water and steam services
  • Advantages of Butterfly Valves -
  1. Compact design requires considerably less space, compared to other valves
  2. Light in weight
  3. Quick operation requires less time to open or close
  4. Available in very large sizes
  5. Low-pressure drop and high-pressure recovery
  • Disadvantages of Butterfly Valves -
  1. Throttling service is limited to low differential pressure
  2. Cavitation and choked flow are two potential concerns
  3. Disc movement is unguided and affected by flow turbulence

CONCLUSION:

  • Learned the significance of GD&T that states how it controls the dimensional variation in parts which leads to less wastage of material, reduces cost, and eliminates inspection of some features, being a language that consists of symbols make it easy for the engineers to communicate with other engineers all over the world.
  • Also, learned how to perform stack/gap analysis using different of stack-up analysis such as RSS, MRSS, and, WC.
  • Learned modeling, assembly, drafting applications in SIEMENS NX CAD and developed a butterfly valve. Also, applied GD&T to individual components as well as the assembly of the butterfly valve.
