Week 11 Challenge

1. Friction load determination

A pipe carrying LNG rests on the shoe having vertical force of 125 kN. Calculate the Friction load on the axis. Also find the friction force, if TEFLON pad is used between shoe and pipe support.

SOLUTION :

  1. For friction force we multiply the load with coefficient of friction in order to get the friction force. Friction force =125 X 0.3 = 37.5KN.
  2. Friction force (with teflon pad)=125 x 0.1=12.5KN.

2. Support Types

Identify the type of support as Spring, Guyed, Stop or Semi Anchor (Guyed + Rest + Stop ) or Rigid Strut from following images.

Figure 1= SPRING SUPPORT.

Figure 2= GUYED SUPPORT.

Figure 3= SEMI ANCHOR SUPPORT.

Figure 4= SEMI ANCHOR SUPPORT.

Figure 5= SEMI ANCHOR SUPPORT.

Figure 6(A)= ANCHOR SUPPORT

Figure 6(B)= GUYED SUPPORT

3. Design of a pipe rack

Design a typical pipe rack bent in oil plant. The pipe rack configuration shall be as shown in Figure 1 and the plan layout as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2

SOLUTION :

  • Make the model as per the given data.
  • Give the property to the column & beam respectively.
  • Give the specification required.
  • In loading command apply all the required load cases and apply all the load type with intensity required.
  • We are not taking Wind & Seismic load in to consideration.
  • Load combination also not taken in to the consideration.

  • operating load is calculated by multiplying the pipe self load plus the water load in it plus the load of insulation to the lenth of the pipe
  • friction load in longitudinal as well as in the transverse direction are considered nill because we have cosidered that the pipe is just resting on the beam.
