Week 11 Challenge
Aim:
1) Design the pile of the given bridge considering 28 m straight span.
- With abutment having backfill
- With abutment having RE wall.
2) List out different components of pile foundations and calculate kg/cumec (poundage) steel quantity in the pile. Design Pile cap as well as per IRC 112. Add the detailing of the piles steel to the scale.
Introduction : The given bridge is of 28m straight span c/c of bearing with a deck width of 12.5m , 1000mm distance from bearing to expansion joint on both sides & 40mm expansion gsp. Superstructure is of PSC I girder & abutment wall is of 800mm dia. Carriage way width is of 8.5m & footpath width is 1.5m but considering future expansion of road live load will be designed for full width. The height of girder is 1.8m
Bed level = 231.5m
FSL = 232.1m
Road / Earth level = 232.361m
Soffit level = 238.172m
Vertical capacity-250 tonne horizontal capacity -40 tonne.
For abutment wind force is not governing so it is not calculated & seismic force out of scope for this document.
There are 2 abutments one on each side of bridge of same size, we design left side abutment considering half forces of superstructure acting on it.

Procedure:
1) Design the pile of the given bridge considering 28 m straight span.
- With abutment having backfill
- With abutment having RE wall.
Ans. Procedure for pile foundation having backfill is as follows:

For design without RE wall earth pressure loading will not be applicable, excel is attached of calculations.
2)List out different components of pile foundations and calculate kg/cumec (poundage) steel quantity in the pile.
Add the detailing of the piles steel to the scale.
- Design Pile cap as well as per IRC 112.
Ans. Components of pile foundations are Pile & Pile Cap.
Results:
Design of pile with backfill

DESIGN OF PILE CAP

Report: Excel is attached herewith for calculations with Backfill & without backfill calculations
