Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
Bullet through Bucket Report
Aim: For this challenge, you will have to simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket. You will need to use 3 different non-linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet. Apply the conditions for bullet as mentioned in the video itself. Attach an animation to show the behaviour in the three cases
Procedure:
- Select Explicit Dynamics, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
- Structural Steel NL, Aluminium Alloy NL and Magnesium Alloy NL are chosen under Engineering Data.
- Under geometry tab, import the given geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model.
- Stiffness Behaviour of Bullet is changed to Rigid under Material.
- Material of Bucket is changed as per the case:
Case 1: Structural Steel NL
Case 2: Aluminium Alloy NL
Case 3: Magnesium Alloy NL
- Mesh size was set to default.
- Face sizing was given to the outer surface of the bucket with 6mm mesh size.
- Under explicit dynamics tab, we set the analysis to 1 step with end time 1e-2s.
- Velocity of 1.39e5mm/sec is given to the bullet.
- The base of the bucket is fixed.
- Total deformation and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
- Run the simulation by clicking on “solve”.
Case 1: Structural Steel NL
Total Deformation:

Eq. Stress:

Case 2: Aluminium Alloy NL

Case 3: Magnesium Alloy NL
Total Deformation:

Eq. Stress:

Conclusion:
From the above simulations, here is the inference:
|
Case: Bucket Material |
Eq. Stress (MPa) |
Tot. Deformation (mm) |
|
Case 1: Structural Steel NL |
3062 |
1390 |
|
Case 3: Aluminium Alloy NL |
2240 |
1390 |
|
Case 3: Magnesium Alloy NL |
1762.1 |
1390 |
We can observe that the deformation in all cases are equal but there is a huge variation in maximum von-mises stress. Maximum stress is experienced by Structural Steel NL and minimum stress is experienced by Magnesium Alloy.
