Week 1 Understanding Different Battery Chemistry
LCO
advantages
- Energy density is high.
- It has a long runtime, which makes it ideal for emerging technologies.
disadvantages
- Because it has a low discharge current, a high load can cause the pack to overheat.
- For charging and discharging, the LCO battery's safety circuit is normally limited to 1C.
LTO
advantages
- Excellent discharge characteristics at low temperatures
- a long life span
- Among the safest Li-ion battery types
disadvantages
- High-priced
- Lower energy density or lower intrinsic voltage
LMO
advantages
- High temperature stability and safety compared to other Li-ion kinds
- Low internal cell resistance allows for fast charging and strong current discharging
disadvantage
- Although it has a lower capacity than a cobalt-based system, however it has a nearly 50% higher energy density than a nickel-based system.
NCA
advantages
- Specific energy is high.
- Specific power is adequate.
- NCA cathodes have the highest energy content in terms of both weight and volume (as NMC).
disadvantage
- Compared to other Li-ion battery types, it has a lower level of safety (they require extra safety features and circuits for use in electric cars for example)
- In compared to other Li-ion battery types, the price is higher.
NMC
advantages
- NMC cells have a longer lifespan.
- Lower energy density, lower cost
disadvantage
- Voltage is slightly lower than in cobalt systems.
LFP
advantages
- Long lifespan
- safer
disadvantage
- lower nominal voltage which reduces the specific energy
