Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
- Compare the deformation and maximum stress developed on a structural steel model for the 2 cases :
CASE A
- Model :

Element Size : 5 mm
Mesh Type : Tetrahedron
- Boundary Condition :

A: Fixed Support
B: Load of 500N
- Solution :
1) Equivalent Von Mises:

Max. Stress : 0.60154 MPa
2) Total Deformation :

Total Deformation : 0.00027479 mm Max.
CASE B
- Model :

Element Size : 5 mm
Mesh Type : Tetrahedron
- Boundary Condition :

A: Load of 500N
B: Fixed Support
- Solution :
1) Equivalent Von Mises:

Max. Stress : 0.58646 MPa
2) Total Deformation :

Total Deformation : 0.00029701 mm Max.
CONCLUSION :
Stress is more in Case A while Total Deformation is more in Case B .
Case A - Stress : 0.60154 MPa Total Deformation : 0.00027479 mm
Case B - Stress : 0.58646 MPa Total Deformation : 0.00029701 mm
- From an analysis standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?
Explaination : From Design point of view , I will select Case B (With Multiple Holes) as the stress is less .
- From a manufacturing standpoint, which of the design will you select? Explain why?
Explaination : From Manufacturing point of view , I will Select Case A as total deformation is less and it will be manufactured less operation and development time will also be less which will increase the production.
