Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
AIM:
To design a plate with hole at the centre with the given dimension and to determine the maximum deformation and stress developed for case 1 and case 2:
DEFORMATION AND STRESS RESULTS:
TOTAL DEFORMATION:
CASE 1:

CASE 2:

Deformation=PL/EA
PL and E is the same for case 1 and case 2. Case 2 has extra 2 holes and at the hole region, so by this formation the deformation value would be higher.
By observing the total deformation values it is clear that the deformation is maximum in case 2 than case 1 because in case-2 the object has less material so its strength would be lesser than case-1.
STRESS RESULTS:
CASE 1:

CASE 2:

Stress=E*strain
From the result it is clear that maximum stress value is more in case 1 than case 2 this is because in case 2 the deformation in x-direction is more so hence stress will be more in case-1.
COMPARING EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN AND EQUIVALENT TOTAL STRAIN

In both the case the equivalent elastic strain and equivalent total strain values are same which means the generated strain is within the elastic limit only.
SELECTION OF DESIGN FROM ANALYSIS POINT OF VIEW:
Case-1 has less deformation than case-2
Case-1 has higher stress value than case-2
Case-1 has higher strain value than case-2
So from analysis point of view case-1 will perform better than case-2 so case-1 will be selected.
SELECTION OF MATERIAL FROM MANUFACTURING POINT OF VIEW:
CASE-1 has one hole at the centre whereas case-2 has 2 more holes near to the centre hole. So time taken and cost to manufacture case-2 will be more than case-1. so case-1 will be easy to manufacture so case-1 will be selected.
CONCLUSION:
Thus the given model was designed and analysed with different point of view and better case was selected.
