Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

(Week 1 Challenge)

AIM: To complete above given challenge of finding the concentration of stress on a Plate with Hole in two different situations.

OBJECTIVE:

1. Perform a Statistical structural analysis using ANSYS Mechanical with Two Plate of different geometric constraints with different number of Holes.

2. The Above structural analysis is performed with two differenent plates so that we can find stress concentrations and by using the results we can find the optimum plate based on design and manufacturing constrainsts

3. We do a Compartive analysis between the results from the above two differnent cases to acheive our objectives.

EXPERIMENTATION:

Case :1

Design a plate with a hole model similar to what we worked in the class, but with increased thickness.
Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center where its diameter=60mm

Material = Structural Steel

CASE:1

RECTANGULAR PLATE WITH A HOLE OF 60MM DIAMETER:

*Meshing (tetrahetdral shape) with an Element size of 2mm

*Applying boundary conditions

In the above figure we have fixed Left Side of the Plate and have applied a force of 500N on the right side

*Total Deformation

*Von-Mises Stress

Case 2:

smaller holes 90mm away from the center:

Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

Material = Structural Steel

RECTANGULAR PLATE OF 1 HOLE WITH DIA 60MM AND TWO HOLES OF 30MM DIA

*Meshing (tetrahedral shape with element size of 2mm)

*Applying boundary Conditions

*Solving for Von-Mises Stress

*Solving for total Deformation

OBTAINED RESULTS AND COMPARTITIVE ANALYSIS:

FROM CASE 1:

FROM CASE 2:

Compartive analyses:

Sl.No. Obtained Results CASE 1 CASE 2
1 Von-Mises Stress(MPa) 0.59405 0.58175
2 Total Deformation(mm) 0.00027 0.00029

FINAL DISCUSSION:

1.From the above analysis alone I shall opt for the plate with a three holes because it has reduced the stress concentration in our given Plate.

2.From the Manufacturing Standpoint I shall choose the one with the single hole because Manufacturing a plate with Single hole is far more simple and less time consuming when compared to manufacturing the one with multiple holes.

3. We can also come to a conclusion that increase in the number of holes will result in the reduction of stress concentration.
